House Democratic leader and Trump’s son-in-law privately discussed cooperation while publicly attacking each other ahead of the midterms

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries met privately with Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and outside adviser, in recent weeks, according to a New York Times report.
Five people with knowledge of the meeting told the Times that Jeffries and Kushner held the session at a private New York City space offered by a mutual friend. Neither man commented through aides.
The pair reportedly discussed areas where a future Democratic House and the Trump administration could work together.
Jeffries is in line to become speaker if Democrats win the House in November. Kushner remains one of Trump’s most influential outside advisers.
The meeting came as both parties publicly trade attacks. Trump has called Jeffries a “thug” and mocked his intelligence. Jeffries has called Trump corrupt and pledged that Democrats would hold “the crooks accountable” if they regain the majority.
Yet the two sides’ private channels remain open.
Jeffries and Kushner have known each other since working on the First Step Act during Trump’s first term.
The meeting shows how Washington’s public warfare can coexist with quiet cooperation when power is on the line.
