At least six people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a market in Poland on Nov. 7.

A gunman allegedly fired shots from a moving car just after 3 p.m. local time at Main Market Square, an urban area in the southern city of Kraków.

The attack happened on Sławkowska Street, a tourist hotspot in the northern corner of Main Market Square, about a quarter of a mile long, lined with cafés, hotels, and museums.

At least 15 people were injured in the shooting. The severity of their injuries is not known.

The Krakow municipal government said the suspected gunman was shot by police and transported to the hospital.

The suspect is a 24-year-old Polish citizen who allegedly acted alone, as he wore a military-style uniform with a bulletproof vest and used a military-type long gun in the attack, according to Katarzyna Cisło, a spokesperson for the Krakow police.

Police believe the victims were targeted randomly.

As of 10:30 a.m. ET, emergency crews were still on the scene and urged people to stay away.

Kraków’s public transport operator, Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacyjne (Municipal Transport Company), often referred to as MPK, said that a tram was shot at during the incident.

“In connection with the events that took place today in the Main Market Square, we have received information from our tram driver that at 3:05 p.m., a tram on route 1 was shot at from a passenger car on All Saints’ Square,” the public transport operator wrote in an X post.

The shooting shattered the window on the driver’s side.

“According to the information we have, neither the passengers nor the driver were injured,” MPK stated.

It’s not clear if the shooter purchased the gun legally.

Poland has a population of 37 million people, with around 411,000 of them holding gun permits.

Krakow, Poland’s second-largest city, receives around 15 million tourists a year, many passing through the Main Square.
