Iran serves as a crucial, centrally located, and stable overland route for Chinese commerce, connecting East and West through railway corridors.
The 2025 launch of direct freight trains from Xi’an to Iran’s Aprin dry port (near Tehran) slashed transit times from ~40 days by sea to 15 days, forming part of a rail link toward Europe.
China is heavily involved in Iranian infrastructure, including subway construction in Tehran and plans to electrify railways from Sarakhs to the Turkish border.
The partnership includes a “Digital Silk Road” (smart cities, digital economy) and ensures Chinese energy security through the purchase of Iranian oil, which is increasingly transported through new overland routes, reducing reliance on risky sea routes.
